Answers to frequently asked questions...

  • Our playlist is an eclectic mix of Old Time, Irish, Scottish, English (Baroque), Klezmer and New England Fiddle tunes. We do not focus on a particular style. If you are looking for a dedicated Bluegrass, Irish, Scottish or Old Time jam, etc., you will be disappointed.
  • This jam is for acoustic instruments. Acoustic/electric bass guitars are welcome.
  • We play at a tempo suitable for new players (anywhere from 1/2 to 2/3 standard tempo). We try to include everyone, but tunes may seem too fast or too slow depending on your skill level. For the newest beginner, even 1/2 tempo can be discouraging. For the more advanced, it can sometimes be boring. We hope to provide something for everyone and somehow reach a middle ground. Our overriding goal is that no one is left out.
  • You are not expected to know every tune. Our jam is about learning to play music with other people. We play in unison. We play each tune many times. Join in when you can. We understand that playing with strangers can be anxiety producing when you are first learning.
  • We follow our playlist. We rely on readily available published music books as source material and for new tunes.  Lead sheets for public domain tunes not found in either Brody's Fakebook or the Portland Collection are usually available for download from the Hetzler's Fakebook web site.
  • We do not have a hidden agenda. We are not auditioning for a band. We are not working on a "project". This is not a thinly disguised group music lesson for which you have to pay money. This is exactly what it appears to be:  A relaxing enjoyable way to spend a Sunday afternoon playing music with like minded people. All you need to participate is a desire to join in. We emphasize music as a social activity...
are shy,  lack confidence in your playing, or have had a  bad experience at other jams, we will make you feel welcome. Playing with others is the best way to become a proficient.

If you read music, we recommend that you bring a copy of Brody's Fiddler's Fakebook and / or The Portland Collection.

If you don't read music or just want to practice, MIDI for most tunes on our playlist are available on line at:
